Valencia is modernism


Modernism is a cultural movement which describes a series of reforms in art, architecture, music, literature and the applied arts between 1890 and 1920. It was developed all around the world, what meant variations in his way of expression, depending on the country or continent.

Specifically talking about architecture, modernism is characterized by the nature theme, the organic forms, the use of new materials such as glass and iron, and decorative elements on the facades and structures where every architect leaves his mark. We see the reflection of a stream of innovative solutions of the compositional elements of a building.


In Spain, Valencia is the city where modernism develops the most. It is clear that the modernist architecture in Valencia is based on the simplicity and clarity of forms, but includes the use of ornaments to redefine the traditional building.
There are three very important architects which built modern architecture in Valencia: Francisco Mora Berenguer who built the Casa Gomez II, Vicente Ferrer Pérez who built The Ferrer house and Lucas García Cardona who built the Apartment building 11. All of these buildings have some characteristics in common and some that makes them unique.


What makes Valencian modernism unique are all the elements in common all their constructions have and the different they look because of the hand of every architect, who takes the work of decorate every part of his building and leave his essence impregnated on it.

In conclusion, the modernism in Valencia was very different, from other places on the same period, this artistic movement made this city unique and we can say that Valencia is modernism, it became the sign of the city.
